Dunham features the latest in outdoor footwear technology.
Dunham’s outdoor performance shoes are inspired by the renowned mountain climber Lou Whittaker. In 1975, Whittaker discovered a need for an athletic type shoe with a rugged outsole for light hiking while on an expedition to K2. After injuring his toe during the expedition, which rendered his feet unfit for his mountaineering boots, Whittaker was forced to hike 140 miles from base camp down the Baltoro Glacier and along the Braldu River in a pair of New Balance tennis shoes. By the time he reached transportation at the head of the road near Skardu his toe had healed. Whittaker subsequently contacted new Balance to not only compliment them on their tennis shoe but to also suggest that the company consider making a tennis-type shoe with a lug sole for light hiking.
